Día Internacional de la Lengua Materna
El Día Internacional de la Lengua Materna se conmemora cada año el 21 de febrero para promover la diversidad lingüística y cultural, así como el multilingüismo. El año 2025 marca el 25º aniversario de esta celebración a nivel mundial. Este hito resalta un cuarto de siglo de esfuerzos dedicados a preservar la diversidad lingüística y fomentar el uso de las lenguas maternas. También reconoce que los idiomas y el plurilingüismo pueden favorecer la inclusión y contribuir al cumplimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible de las Naciones Unidas, bajo la premisa de que nadie debe quedarse atrás. La UNESCO considera que la educación basada en la lengua materna debe comenzar desde los primeros años, ya que la atención y educación en la primera infancia constituyen la base del aprendizaje.
Según las Naciones Unidas, los idiomas tienen implicaciones fundamentales para la identidad, la comunicación, la integración social, la educación y el desarrollo, lo que los convierte en un recurso estratégico para las personas y el planeta. Sin embargo, debido a los procesos de globalización, muchas lenguas están en peligro de extinción o desaparecen por completo. Cuando un idioma se desvanece, también se pierde una parte invaluable de la diversidad cultural del mundo. Las sociedades multilingües y multiculturales existen gracias a sus idiomas, que transmiten y preservan el conocimiento tradicional y las culturas de manera sostenible.
En el Colegio Rochester, valoramos el plurilingüismo y elegimos participar en esta conmemoración global como parte de nuestro proyecto educativo y visión estratégica. Este día es una oportunidad para compartir, celebrar y fortalecer el aprendizaje y el desempeño académico. Durante la jornada, se llevan a cabo diversas actividades como presentaciones, exhibiciones, competencias saludables que fomentan el uso del conocimiento, conferencias con invitados especiales y otras experiencias diseñadas para celebrar y expandir el aprendizaje útil.Los padres de familia son nuestros invitados especiales en esta celebración, ya que queremos que perciban el éxito y la calidad del aprendizaje de sus hijos. Este objetivo está alineado con una de las metas prioritarias de nuestra institución: que cada estudiante se sienta seguro, amado, aprenda todo lo esperado y que sus padres lo perciban de la misma manera.
Como parte de esta celebración, los estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de ir más allá del nivel de competencia y alcanzar niveles avanzados y/o de maestría en su aprendizaje. Esta iniciativa busca fomentar la creatividad y la innovación en los estudiantes, además de desarrollar y aplicar competencias de alto rendimiento en situaciones personales, locales y globales, desde una perspectiva multilingüe, intercultural y de ciudadanía global.

Rochester’s Language Show and Tell Day

International Mother Language Day is observed every year on February 21st to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The year 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of International Mother Language Day in the world. This milestone highlights a quarter-century of dedicated efforts to preserve linguistic diversity and promote the use of mother tongues. It recognizes that languages and plurilingualism can advance inclusion, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals’ focus on leaving no one behind. UNESCO believes education, based on the first language or mother tongue, must begin from the early years as early childhood care and education is the foundation of learning.
According to the United Nations, languages, with their complex implications for identity, communication, social integration, education and development, are of strategic importance for people and the planet. Yet, due to globalization processes, they are increasingly under threat, or disappearing altogether. When languages fade, so does the world’s rich tapestry of cultural diversity. Multilingual and multicultural societies exist through their languages which transmit and preserve traditional knowledge and cultures in a sustainable way.
At Rochester School, we value plurilingualism and choose to participate in this annual, global observance as part of our educational project and strategic intent. It is a day for sharing, celebrating and cultivating learning and performance. This day includes activities, such as presentations, exhibits, healthy competitions that promote the using of knowledge, guest speakers, and other ways to celebrate and grow useful knowledge. The parents, in particular, are our special guests, for whom this activity was designed because we want them to perceive the success and quality learning of their children. This aim is related to our school’s high priority goal—Every student feels safe, loved, learns all that is expected, and his/her parents perceive it that way. As part this celebration, students have the opportunity to go above and beyond competent level learning, and achieve advanced and/or mastery level learning. This purpose strives to promote student creativity and innovation and developing and applying high- performing competencies to real-life personal, local, and global situations with a multilingual, intercultural, and global citizenship perspective.
We invite you all to participate in this celebration of use of knowledge and quality learning!
